Why you need to read “Think and Grow Rich” by Napoleon Hill

After I finished my Joseph Prince book, Destined to Reign, I was going away on a work trip and I really wanted to buy The Miracle Morning by Hal Elrod. So that weekend I went to my local Barnes and Noble store in hopes of finding it there. I asked for help and a man told me that it is a print-on-demand book. He said it would take about 7 days before it shipped. I was leaving in 6 days and I really wanted a good book to read while I was away. Upon looking around in the personal development section, I came across “Think and Grow Rich” by Napoleon Hill. I knew a little about this book because a guy I served with in the Navy was reading it once while we were out at sea. So I bought it. I was just happy to have bought a book. When I did my early morning rise the next day, I read “The Author’s Preface” and was instantly pulled in by what I was reading. I had no idea that this book was written in 1937 and the influence that it has had on successful people’s lives throughout the world, furthermore, I had no idea the influence that it would have on mine. This book shares stories from the start of the 20th century of how others became successful. Think and Grow Rich is not a business book per se, but it shares the philosophy of a great businessman, Andrew Carnegie who is known as the Steel King and many others who have followed similar philosophies on their paths to success. Napoleon Hill states that during his time with Mr. Carnegie, he shared his formula to success and that “this formula should be taught in all public schools and colleges”, and he expressed the opinion that if it were properly taught, “it would so revolutionize the entire educational system that the time spent in schools could be reduced to less than half.

As I read, Think and Grow Rich, I became more and more excited because it was speaking to the deep desire within me to become successful and to create wealth. It opened my eyes to the principle that everything begins within your mind. The Bible states in Proverbs 23:7 that “As a man thinketh, so is he.” Napoleon Hill states “Whatever the mind can conceive and believe, it can achieve.

The more you think about that principle you begin to realize that everything really does begin within your thought life. If you do not believe in yourself, that you can achieve great things in life, then you won’t. Your mind is like a garden; whatever you sow in your mind, you will eventually see take root. For example, if you surround yourself with people who do not have a desire to become successful then you won’t either. In other words you will begin to think like those you surround yourself with. Maybe you will just get a plain old job and settle for something that is simply average. You will have no aspirations to become a manager, a businessman, or some kind of leader. You will go into work from8:00 AM to 5:00 PM but be poor both mentally and financially. Likewise, if you surround yourself with people who want to start successful businesses and be millionaires, then you will be more likely follow suit. The whole idea is to begin changing the way you think and surround yourself with people who think big, dream big and take massive action.

This is a must-read book

Ask yourself this question, “ What brings me fulfillment? What makes me happy? What do I enjoy doing? How can I create wealth doing what I love to do?” When you begin taking a hard look in the mirror the only thing that holds you back is yourself. What kind of thoughts are running through your mind? Do you have a sense of purpose in life? Napoleon Hill states in his introduction, “Truly, thoughts are things and powerful things at that when they are mixed with definiteness of purpose, persistence, and a burning desire for their translation into riches or other material objects.” Beautifully written is this statement because whether you believe it or not, you will become what you think about and what you think about will become your reality… good or bad.

It’s inevitable, thoughts are always running through our minds. How we choose to use our energy and time is up to us. All it takes is one solid idea and definite plans to carry it out and you can obtain success. Napoleon Hill speaks about a man who was obsessed with digging for gold in Colorado. This is the story of R.U. Durby and his uncle who got caught up in the gold rush.  Napoleon Hill states “He had never heard that more gold has been mined from the human mind than has ever been taken from the earth.”  After reading these words, I began thinking to myself, “What kind of business can I start? How can I create wealth and get out of debt? How can I capitalize on my gifts and talents?” I started writing ideas down and thinking of ways to make these ideas a reality. I urge you to do the same. Napoleon Hill shares his experiences from speaking with many successful people about how they obtained great wealth. This book is a philosophy, a way of life. A great quote from the book; “Success comes to those who become SUCCESS-CONSCIOUS. Failure comes to those who become FAILURE-CONSCIOUS.” You will not become wealthy or successful if your thought life is steeped in poverty and failure. Remember, if you want to become successful at anything you have to change your thought life!
