“When you educate a man, you liberate a man.” Dr. Ben Carson
The definition of liberate is “to set free, as from imprisonment or bondage.” Growing up, we are all taught very little about how the United States Government works, historical events, how to create wealth, how to become entrepreneurs, how to balance our financial accounts, the importance of influence and so on. And during this time we are all told to get an education, go to college, get a good job, and so forth. Yet that mentality has failed many of us. There are many reasons why we should all go to college but at the same time many students change their majors while in college. Why?? It is because they are still trying to figure out what kind of job will pay good, or they are just clueless on what to do in life. I have been there myself. So allow me to share my personal experience and my personal opinion on this matter.
When I began avidly reading books, I became obsessed with biographies on successful people, but also, significant historical events that changed the course of human history. I remember reading about the early Colonial Americans and what actually lead up to the Revolution in the late 1700s. And while I was reading, I was transported back to a time where war was the only solution for freedom. I had no idea that life in the colonies was so heavily effected by England’s death grip on them. Thomas Jefferson said, “As our enemies have found we can reason like men, so now let us show them we can fight like men also.”
When I read the many accounts of what life was like in those days, I felt liberated in a sense because I was now educated about an important, even foundational part of American history. I was educating myself! I was freeing myself! And you should do the same! When trying to become a businessman or businesswoman, read business books by successful men and women and see where they failed or succeeded and learn from them. In Think and Grow Rich, Napoleon Hill talks about “Specialized Knowledge” and what real education is pertaining to someone trying to create wealth. He states “Knowledge will not attract money unless it is organized and intelligently directed, through practical plans of action, to the definite end of accumulating money. Knowledge is only potential power.” It goes back to what Jesus Christ said in John 8:32 “Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
As I learn more and more, I become well aware of my surroundings and what I am capable of becoming. I am a child of God and the creator of the Universe has breathed His spirit into me and I know that I was born to become successful. But unless I have that revelation I will stay mediocre. Great men and women have gone before me, and if they succeeded, I can too! For many of us, real education is signified by a diploma and for others of us, real education is signified by actually becoming better at what we love to do. The key point I am trying to make is that real education begins when you have come to a place where you actually want to learn something. And once you have begun learning whatever it is you love, you will begin to mature. So my advice to you is go to your nearest Barnes and Noble and get a book on any subject you are interested in. Read about the men and women who helped build America, read about successful businessmen and women of the past, read self-help books and so on. Education doesn’t end after High School or College, it ends when your passion for learning dies. Never stop being a student.
