“Jefferson valued his education – and educated in general – above all things…” Thomas Jefferson; The Art of Power
The value of true education is much greater than a piece of paper from a university. Will a diploma guarantee success? Will it guarantee great financial wealth? Consider that some of the most influential people in history had little to no formal education. Thomas A Edison had only 3 months of formal education in his entire life and yet, he was a genius! He was behind many great inventions, one of which is the light bulb. Henry Ford had less than a sixth grade education and he too changed the world with the invention of the automobile. Steve Jobs dropped out of college to pursue a passion and Apple was born. I am not advocating dropping out of school or anything like that but you need to realize that school doesn’t mean you are truly educated, nor does it bring success. But honestly, true education is achievable by anyone who really wants it bad enough.
Simply put, whatever it is that you have a passion for, you need to become an expert in. Learn the basics and then stay up with the latest developments of the specific area you want to know more about. One of the most tried and true ways of becoming educated is by reading books. I am a huge advocate for reading. Simply by reading, I have learned so much about so many different subjects many of which have greatly enriched my life, such as the rivalry between Andrew Carnegie and John D. Rockefeller. Reading about how competitive they were in business got me thinking, “I want to be a wealthy businessman just like they were. I want to change the world. I want to give to those less fortunate.” What I love about reading is that I am becoming educated through the stories of successful people throughout history and that education is enriching my life and enhancing my future.
Today, we put too much emphasis on a piece of paper when many people who went to school are finding their real passion later on and pursuing that instead of the degree that they acquired in college. One of your greatest assets in the pursuit of success is ambition. Without taking a step towards improving yourself, you will get nowhere. It takes ambition to pick up a book and read it. It takes ambition to take classes at night. It takes ambition when you are trying to better yourself and find ways to create wealth. I personally believe that everyone is creative in some aspect. Begin to fill your mind with knowledge and seek wisdom.
Do not settle for less than what you have! You were created to be great and you need to know that. Do not settle for mediocrity. Do not just do the simple and the basic. Go above and beyond. Educate yourself! If you love sewing, don’t just settle on being good, but find someone who loves sewing too and learn from them; ever becoming better and more experienced at your craft.
An interview by Entrepreneur
with Shark Tank’s Robert Herjavec read,“At 14, Herjavec says he was bitten by the entrepreneurial bug. He knew he wanted to start his own business one day, so he asked his dad who he should talk to for advice. His father pointed him to the most senior employee in the factory that he worked for. It wasn’t the answer the ambitious future millionaire was looking for. “To my parents, he was the most successful person they knew because he was the guy who wasn’t going to get fired or laid off.”Without early exposure to a mentor who wasn’t more than just good enough — someone who didn’t have to worry about making rent or any bill, someone who’d really made it and big — Herjavec scoured books for the wisdom he had no mentor to turn to for. He devoured biographies about exceptionally successful people. “That’s when I learned that nobody cares about average. Greatness is what counts. If you want to be successful and make a lot of money or be famous, or whatever it is that you define as success, do one thing and do it better than everyone else. Do whatever it takes to be great.Find your talent, be great at it and apply it to the best of your ability. When you do, not only will you be successful, you’ll get a sense of personal satisfaction and fulfillment that no amount of money can buy.”
Learn from great men and women, because when you do this, you will soon discover your God-given talents and you will be on your way to success.
