Never Tell Your Dreams to Small-Minded People

Never Tell Your Dreams to Small-Minded People

It is exciting when someone begins to dream about the impossible. What is considered “the impossible” can be something simple such as you believing that you can leave whatever your environment may be and telling a co-worker or family member, “Hey man, I am not going to be here very long. There is more for me out there… Greatness is within me and I have to go get it.” And that person you shared your thoughts with laughs at you. It can be hurting to know that there are people within your life that see life with a small narrow view. For many of us that are pursuing something greater in our lives, we have to protect that dream, we have to believe that we can and will achieve what we dream because you are the only one who will see it and believe it. No one else will.

Steve Harvey once said “Never tell your dreams to small minded people.” Why? Because they have a screwed view of life. Many people will not see what you are see simply because their own mind has become limited. Limited by defeat, failure, failed opportunities and so on. But you have to continue to feed your mind positive thoughts that allow you to see past all hurdles because you believe in your dream. Do not let the opinions of others shape your life because if you do, you are allowing their words control you and your future. Do not be afraid to find some new friends or people of influence. Do whatever you have to do and leave those people behind you.

When I was 20 and I left home to join the Navy, I had many friends who still continued to party, did drugs and so on. But deep down inside of me, I knew that that kind of life was over. I looked at my circle of influence and no one was going anywhere. Where I worked at the time, I looked around me and saw all the men and they were not going anywhere too. It was like as if they all had given up on life and there was nothing else. I had to leave and shortly after a few months I left. I am so glad that I made the choice to leave. So what I am saying to you is this, examine your life and see those around you and ask yourself a question “If I continue to hang around the people that I am currently hanging with, where I am going to end up?” If you have big dreams, you need to be around people who have big dreams. Be around like-minded people who are on the same journey as you. Find successful businessmen or women who have achieved great success and ask if they can mentor you. I have found out that most successful people are willing to share what they had to do and what they had to overcome in order to get to where they are. When you begin to learn from people like that, your dreams begin to grow not only tangibly but also they begin to grow inside of you.

Now if you were to share your ideas and dreams with a small minded person, one or two things will happen. #1. They will either begin to become inspired too because no one has spoken like you have and they will be hungry for success or #2. Because all they know is poverty and failure, they will laugh at you or put you down and say something like “That will never happen.” or “That is not possible.” At that moment you need to make a decision, do you want to continue this relationship or move on. You have to make a decide for yourself what are you going to do. I have made mine.

Everyday at work, I will write on my dry erase board a quote that will inspire me. I will write something from a book I’m reading or whatever comes in my head. One morning after a recording, I came into my office and saw that someone wrote “Not” in between “I’m going” See the pictures below. I have to be honest, seeing that “Not” stung me in my heart and my gut because there is someone who knows that I have a desire to seek success and move forward with my life and not be tied down. I have no idea who wrote that on my board and it doesn’t matter. I erased it and began to declare that “I’m going to make it!” Words have power and depending on what words you choose, you will either lift yourself or someone up or tear them down.
